Vermeer : the man of mystery

At first glance, the paintings of Piet Mondrian may appear almost too simple to be taken seriously. A grid of black lines. Blocks of red, blue, and yellow. No figures, no landscapes, no visible subject. It is easy to mistake them for something mechanical, or even decorative. And yet, this apparent simplicity is the result of a long and deliberate process of reduction.
