Huizong of the Song dynasty

Huizong of the Song dynasty

On the morning of March 20, 1127, the iron hooves of the Jurchen Jin army broke through the gates of Bianjing. By late March, the Northern Song dynasty had fallen, in what history remembers as the Jingkang Incident. Along with countless treasures of gold and silver, members of the imperial family were taken captive—including the reigning emperor, Emperor Huizong of Song. After his capture, he lost his freedom and lived under long-term confinement. Both his body and spirit were subjected to severe suffering, and he eventually died in exile in 1135. Judged as an emperor, his record is undeniably disgraceful. But judged from the perspective of artistic achievement, he can be regarded as a perfectionist.
